I’m quite new to WordPress and the first thing that struck me is how many really beautiful and professionally designed WordPress themes are available for free download. Most of the time, the only “payment” or restriction, is that you attribute the design to the designer, and keep the link back to their site. In this collection, you’ll find 11 awesome, high-quality, free WordPress themes. I’ve chosen magazine style themes because they’re my favourite, and in the hunt for the theme I customised for Moonsail Design, I found many other lovely ones that I’d like to share with you.

Make sure you check the original site and the theme itself for any restrictions in use and it’s always a good idea to link back to the designer, even if they don’t ask you to.

1. Compositio Theme

I’m a fan of the big dates on the left of this theme (still can’t figure out how to do it on my own theme, but oh well) because they really lead your eye down the page. I also like the “About this blog” area at the top, I think that’s a useful feature, as well as the photostream.

2. Imprezz Theme

I’m a fan of the big dates on the left of this theme as well, and the solid bar makes a really strong graphic statement as well as providing clear navigation. I also like that the ads are shoved off to the right beside the naviagation so they’re really separate from the content.

The site is designed by Gopal at Productive Dreams and is available for preview and download here. He also has some fantastic freebies on his site. Well worth checking out.

3. Lime Squash Theme

This is quite a spacious design, nice and breezy. The three columns allows for the sidebar to be on the left with all the links and the ads on the right. Look for the Show/Hide navigation button. A nifty little feature, and of course, those fabulous big dates again. I’m starting to get “big date” envy!

4. Magazeen Theme

This is so elegant. Love the photo strip across the top. Also love the big picture features, like a print magazine, and the pink comments are such a nice touch. The colours are quite spacious and yet you can fit lots of info in there.

5. Magaling Theme

I love the box grid look, especially in grey. It’s all quite sombre and sophisticated. The large feature image makes it feel very “magazine” like, even if the dark colours don’t. Would be good for tech blog I feel.

6. Mild Cotton Theme

The big dates in quote boxes are quite cute, and the subdued pastel colours make this fairly breezy and east to look at. Nowhere for ads, as far as I can tell, which is why it’s quite clean and fresh.

7. Mimbo Theme

Mimbo is quite slick and sophisticated. The subdued colours and three-column newspaper features feel is quite elegant. Would be great for a fashion or interior design blog perhaps?

8. Open Air Theme

The header, menu and feature story work really well together as a unit on this theme, and then it opens up to be quite spacious underneath. The categories are dealt with in an interesting way and there’s still plenty of room for a photostream, ads and other feature images. Lots of scope for content here.

9. Typebased Theme

I love the way the dates have been handled on the side panel and all of the choices on the right hand sidebar really make this a workable and flexible design. Love it. There are also five colour themes to choose from.

10. WordPress Fun Theme

As the name suggests, this is a fun theme. There is also quite a lot of text area on the theme though, so even though the character is quite playful, the site has some serious structure. I imagine a classic diary-style blog would work well on this.

11. WP Premium Theme

This is a classic magazine style theme and quite similar to the one I’m using for this blog. It has an “about me” section and a Twitter feed, and the comment boxes are a nice touch. Very elegant.
