Student Showcase
Jacque Prior
Jacque is a recent graduate from the Queensland University of Technology (Kelvin Grove) with a Bachelor of Creative Industries.
Jacque has a strong and bold style, an obsessive passion for typography and a strong belief in simple yet effective design and that design can be used to make a positive difference in the world. Jacque lists: design, typography, grids, Helvetica, minimalism, Swiss design, stationery, trail line maps, street art, photography, sustainable design and helping to make a positive difference as some things to love. Couldn’t agree more!
This image is from the 2009 Queensland University of Technology Animation and Communication Design Graduate Exhibition
Ashleigh Brennan
Ashleigh is a recent graduate from the Queensland College of Art (Griffith University on the Gold Coast) with a Bachelor of Visual Media.
There is absolutely no doubt about it…Ashleigh loves typography. All of her pieces are either beautifully constructed or illustrated typographic marvels, as well as some beautiful illustrations of birds and other creatures. Even her logotype is exquisitely constructed, and painstakingly worked over. The phrase “attention to detail” doesn’t even begin to cover it. As she says on her website: “Ashleigh Brennan is…Addicted to sugar. Quiet until you get to know her. A perfectionist. Completely obsessed with typography. And constantly inspired by everything that she sees. She is a graphic designer.”
This image showcases some of Ashleigh’s typography for a university publication.
Samantha Hall
Sammie is a recent graduate from the Queensland College of Art (Griffith University on the Gold Coast) with a Bachelor of Visual Media.
Samantha has put together a snazzy little Flash template site with all the bells and whistles and has themed the site around her initials S.H as the beginning of S.Hhh Designs. Cute. Following on from that theme, she’s combined an illustration with her branding proposition, which is an interesting idea. As you look through the site, you’ll see that modelling and illustration form a large part of Sammie’s design portfolio.
This image showcases the best of Sammie’s illustration skills and also serves as her primary branding.
Adam Zelinski
Adam is a recent graduate from the Queensland College of Art (Griffith University on the Gold Coast) with a Bachelor of Visual Media.
Adam has designed a moody little website for his design identity “305 Designs”. Adam is quite a bold designer and loves RnB/urban style music, and this love of music shows through in all his work. His CD covers are terrific, and he has tried his hand at illustration as well on a range of musically inspired T-shirts.
This image is of Pharrell Williams and shows off Adam’s love of Photoshop and image manipulation. Great stuff.
Katelyn Hankinson
Katelyn is a recent graduate from the Queensland College of Art (Griffith University on the Gold Coast) with a Bachelor of Visual Media.
As her work demonstrates, she’s quite a character. She’s quite quirky and full of fun and this carries through into her work, as this picture shows. Even though she’s a Graphic Designer, she’s managed to splash out into some fantastic product design and is also shaping up to be quite the handy little website designer as well. Don’t let her quirkiness fool you however, a lot of her work is also very strong corporate branding, and she has some very nice samples on her site, as well as some serious awards to show for it.
As her website says: “Katelyn is a conscientious designer, who constantly strives to please. She designs from the heart of her fringe and bow. Always endeavouring to add a splash of ‘Katelyn Quirk’ into everything she creates. Katelyn is a quirky character and she would love to design quirky things for you!”
This image is from her “Fringe and Bow” collection of quirky coffee caddies, and they make a great addition to any household. I already have one and I’m fishing for another.
Porsha Marais
Porsha is currently a third year graphic design student at the Queensland College of Art (Griffith University on the Gold Coast) studying for her Bachelor of Visual Media.
She also works at her parent’s design agency Impressions Imprint whilst she studies.
As it says on her own website “It took me 4 degree changes and some random full time work in the finance industry to realise that I wanted to be a graphic designer. It really should have been obvious though as I have always wanted to design – at first it was industrial, than interior, then fashion and now finally graphics.”
Her work is beautifully detailed and delicate and she already has a well developed style. Porsha combines illustration, typography and a subdued colour palette very successfully.
Porsha also has a blog, which in this day and age is a very good idea, especially if you want to get known for your ideas and new work as well: http://blog.porshamarais.com/
If you’re a current design student, I’d love to showcase your work.
