My students have started asking me about WordPress, especially when it comes time to build their folios, and I always recommend that the best way is to do some online tutorials. The problem is, as usual, they then ask me what sites they should look at, so I decided to put together this list, rather than trying to remember them all. I’ve found tutorials are useful, as are forums. When I really run into a brick wall, sometimes forums are the best place to get a specific question answered, but if you’re just starting out, these tute sites are great. Please let me know if you find any other free WordPress tutorial sites that belong on this list, and enjoy!
1. WordPress Codex
When learning WordPress, you may as well start at the source. The official WordPress codex is a great place to start, especially when you’re trying to write new php hooks, but for the beginner, the lessons are great to build your foundational knowledge.
2. NetTuts+
Brought to you by the team from the awesome Tuts Plus network, the Net Tuts website has a WordPress section.
3. 1st Web Designer
In similar fashion to NetTuts, 1st Web Designer have a whole bunch of tutorials about web design in general, but the WordPress section alone is quite comprehensive and worth a look.
4. Noupe
Noupe is part of the Smashing Magazine network, so you know it is quality. They have web and Photoshop tutorials, but also a dedicated WordPress section.
5. Digging into WordPress
This site is brought to you by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr, both well-known WordPress developers, with quality sites all over the internet.
6. Themelab
Apart from having a pretty cute logo, Themelab has free themes as well as some great tutorials for beginners.
7. We Function
A great tutorial website for all things web, but these days, most of the tutorials are WordPress.
8. WP Canyon
This site is a little more advanced if you’ve just started out, but once you get going, the tips and hacks on this site can prove very useful.
9. WordPress Hacks
This website should actually be called “World of WordPress” as it talks about all things WordPress. There’s codes, themes, hacks, forums and tutorials. Everything you’ll need, but maybe not for complete beginners.
10. CSS Tricks
Whilst not strictly a WordPress tutorial site, CSS is such an intrinsic part of WordPress, you would do well to check out this site as well.
